So it turns out the IAC valve was bad and once I replaced it it started right up and idled at the regular 1000-1200 rpms. I haven't driven it much because of this, today was the first chance I got to take it into work. it has more power and throttle response, I'm watching for the mileage yet, no change today. tail pipe still had some smell yesterday but there is 224000 dirty miles on it so it might take a while to clean up. The video of teh install is on Gadgetman Michael's youtube channel if you'd like to see more about it. the van ran fine at first because I left the evap hose off the throttle body and it was taking the idle air in through there. once i fixed the evap line I had issues. thank you all for your help I'll keep you posted on mileage changes.

I'm of a mind to agree with TracyG on an idle in the 1000-1200 range being too high, Clinton, Is there an IAC relearn procedure you needed to follow when it got replaced?

it doesn't appear to need a IAC relearn procedure but since I changed it and it is running I'll probably try to do a ECU reboot for the Groove, see if there's any changes.

Just curious, Clinton. Was the IAC valve and passage dirty? OR was it clean, and the IAC didn't work? I've preached here before cleaning IAC valves/passages...?

I'm hoping this gets your idle back down to where Tracy and I think it should be - half of the 1000 to 1200rpm you think is normal - even with the AC on.
Ron's got one of the same vans - what does HIS idle at?

Tracy, the IAC path way was clean for the most part, Gadgetman Michael sandblasted it when he put the groove in. I did remove and clean the IAC before I ordered a new one and I thought that helped but when I went to start it cold it wouldn't work again. but I have used it to go to work now and it is working good. I am interested to hear what Ron's similar van idles at?

Why not call him yourself and ask? Ron's always up for a chat...the number is easily found: it's everywhere!
