First it was VW and their diesels, next came Mitsubishi. Benz and others are taking this opportunity to look proactive and try to stay righteous.

I wonder if they'd be more open to having a closer look at Ron's Groove now?

All the creative ways carmakers manipulate emissions tests—that we know about

My feeling is we need to get away from ECU emissions tests and go back to tailpipe testing so that the whole planet can be muffler suckers. Further, simplifying the computer controls of autos wouldn't be a bad idea either...like getting rid of intake air temp and MAP sensors and let the O2s do the trim work.

I think there is enormous room for some common-sense thinking in all this. Common sense, and real solutions, are coming to the front of the line on many levels now, and not just with cars and emissions!

At least it seems that way...

absolutely there's room for common sense, something lacking greatly lately.

I think I saw a link on reddit last week from the UK's Guardian newspaper alleging that ExxonMobil has been suppressing fuel economy patents since the 60s...let me see if I can find that link to further this conversation.

yup, found it:

While I have not opened that link yet, it's an established dogma that oil co's and carmakers have suppressed advancements in fuel economy, and other areas of automotive technology. Just consider the story of Preston Tucker, and the Tucker Torpedo, in the late 40's. Or the story of Stanley Meyer's water-fuel technology, and his untimely demise. Or all the stories of Vapor Carburetors, like Charles Pogue's and all the others. On and on this theme goes, for many decades. The story of Paul Pantone, and GEET. Sadly Paul Pantone passed away this past December. What about Bruce McBurney, your once near neighbor? Can you guess what is really the biggest Vested Interest in all this?

IT's really the story of Big Money, power and Politics having their way. Human nature, or the dark side of it. I don't go on about this stuff, really- One can rail against the darkness, or one can light a candle. Easier to find the way out of the Cave that way...

Careful with that open flame in those engine bays, Tracy! :silly:

Always best to quietly and diligently spread the truth this way.

A candle works, but a road flare puts out more light. And besides, if there's a fuel, natural gas or other combustible leak, you find it faster.

Saturn lied about my milage, government said I should only be getting 36mpg on highway, I seem to be getting 45mpg with AC on with a lead foot in stop and go traffic (99% stock), Damn big goverment and their scheming ways.

Same goes for the diesel powered VWs, for getting 50mpg it was well worth the extra output of NOx emmisions.

Also, pro tip, leave your windows up, and keep the AC on, you get far better mileage. Flushed my cooling system and had the heater core cycling and needed the windows down, I only got 30mpg that day...
